Mid-2026 Ocean Freight Market Update: Rising Freight Costs Highlight the Importance of Early Shipment Planning

As of June 2026, the international ocean freight market has once again experienced significant fluctuations.

After a relatively stable start to the year, freight rates across major global trade routes have generally moved upward, driven by a combination of factors including escalating tensions in the Middle East, rising international oil prices, the early arrival of the traditional peak shipping season, and concentrated rate adjustments by shipping lines. Although current freight rates remain below the record highs seen during the pandemic, the short-term upward trend has become increasingly evident.

For exporters, planning production schedules and shipment arrangements in advance remains a crucial strategy to mitigate logistics risks and ensure stable and timely deliveries.

Freight Rates Rise Across Major Global Trade Routes

According to the latest data from Drewry's World Container Index (WCI), the average global spot rate for a 40-foot container has climbed to USD 3,549 per FEU, continuing the upward trend seen over the past several weeks.

Meanwhile, the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) indicates that multiple export markets, including South America and the Middle East, are also facing upward pressure on freight rates.

Among them:

  • Freight rates on South America routes have increased by approximately 17.3%compared with previous levels;
  • Freight rates on Middle East routes have risen by around 3.4%;
  • Several shipping lines have introduced General Rate Increases (GRI)and Peak Season Surcharges (PSS)for shipments to South America, the Middle East, and Africa, with single adjustments generally ranging from USD 300 to USD 800 per FEU.

This suggests that the current round of rate increases is not confined to a few specific regions, but is affecting major trade routes worldwide. For exporters serving markets in Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe, both logistics costs and booking pressures have increased.

Ongoing War Risks Continue to Disrupt Global Supply Chains

The recent escalation of tensions in the Middle East has once again become a major factor driving ocean freight rates higher.

The market had previously expected that, as the situation in the Red Sea eased, some shipping lines would gradually resume transits through the Suez Canal. However, as of now, most carriers continue to reroute vessels around the Cape of Good Hope to mitigate potential risks.

These diversions not only extend transit times by 10 to 15 days, but also increase fuel consumption, crew-related expenses, and pressure on vessel turnaround efficiency.

At the same time, heightened tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz have pushed international oil prices higher, further increasing fuel surcharge costs. Geopolitical uncertainty continues to weigh on the stability of global logistics networks.

Peak Season Arrives Early, Leaving Further Room for Rate Increases

In addition to geopolitical factors, this year's traditional peak shipping season appears to have arrived earlier than usual.

As importers in Europe and the United States move up their inventory replenishment plans, coupled with concerns over potential changes in future trade policies, many cargo owners have chosen to ship orders originally scheduled for the third quarter ahead of time. In response, shipping lines have gradually introduced new FAK (Freight All Kinds) rates, as well as adjustments to GRI and PSS charges.

Industry participants generally believe that as the traditional shipping peak season approaches in July and August, freight rates on certain high-demand routes may still have further room to rise.

Overall, the ocean freight market in 2026 continues to face numerous challenges and uncertainties. Factors such as geopolitical tensions, fluctuations in energy prices, seasonal demand during the traditional peak shipping season, and changes in trade policies are all shaping the direction of the global shipping market. At the same time, the simultaneous release of new shipping capacity and carriers' capacity management strategies have made freight rate movements increasingly complex and unpredictable.

In such a market environment, shipping lines, freight forwarders, and import-export enterprises all need to closely monitor market developments, adjust their logistics and procurement strategies in a timely manner, and proactively respond to changing conditions. For exporters, planning production schedules and shipment timelines in advance, allocating transportation resources efficiently, and maintaining close communication with logistics partners will help reduce supply chain risks, ensure smooth order fulfillment, and maintain a competitive edge in an increasingly uncertain global trade environment.
